A new flagship GFX model was recently announced, but those who have been checking Fuji rumours would have known this was coming for months.
The specs look very impressive, with the main emphasis on the still side of things being ‘speed’. The issue with the GFX, well I wouldn’t call it an issue considering the size of the glass & files it’s pushing, it’s not exactly slow, is it being seen as ‘slow’…
8 Frames a second, black out free is a little insane.
When I saw this feature at the online presentation, I started to think ‘is this the end of me using APSC?’ Something I’ve questioned on and off for a long time.
For me the APSC Fujifilms, XT3 & XH2 were there mainly for video [feautures I’ve never really fully utalised], but also to pick up the slack on some of the aspects the original GFX lines up couldn’t handle that well, being speed.
Detachable grip, I think this a is a better option opposed to the larger form factor of the 100.
Realea Ace | The amount of information that goes into the colour balance of their film/film simulations is wild.
I’m sure I’ll be getting my hands on this system very soon, but these are a few points I like from the new camera.
Faster shooting across the board, this is one complaint I often hear from others using the camera, but for me, as someone who is more of a table top/considered photographer, it’s not that much of an issue. I’m questioning wether it encroaches on the X system & where that sits within my workflow.
Double Buffer memory & CF B Express is very welcomed.
Smaller form factor [compared to my 100 System]
Stills & movie switch [not present on my 100 system]
The Design is lovely
Removable EVF remains
8k welcomed, but do we need this? [this is a point I’ll raise later]

Lots of positives, but do I need this system?
The answer is more than likely ‘no’.
but with the regular release of cameras these days [and the GF 100 being nearly 4 years old] I will upgrade to the latest system as the resale value has fallen off a cliff [as with all modern tech] & will continue to do so with time. I’d much rather cash in now and get the latest and greatest than be like one of those bitter Phase One back owners trying to shift a £30,000 back for the same they paid for it 10 years later.
I’m questioning wether it encroaches on the X system & where that sits within my workflow.
Yeah, seriously, I’ve always questioned the X series for years. Even writting this psot I am changing my mind as I write. I initially thought,
‘With the additional speed, maybe I no longer need my X series system?’
I’m yet to test the GFX 100 II & I’m well aware it wouldn’t be as fast as the XH2, but it did make me question it. I’m just a little too bogged down in image quality. When you use cameras like the GFX, you really can’t go backwards & you just start to pixel peep files, which is really not good for my creativity.
Just release and XPro 4 please… I’d trade in my XH2 for that.
8k welcomed, but do we need this?
I welcome 4k 4.2.2 internal on the GFX, but would I ever use it outside of a studio? Maybe, probably, I’m not 100% sure.
The same stands for 8K video. I know if this camera didn’t have 8K people would scream & moan, but I don’t know who this is for. I’m well aware that Fujifilm are targeting the Alexa crowd with this camera. I could see this camera being used in a more controlled professional environment on a dolly or crane/drone, but to think that it’ll replace cameras such as the XH2/s [and similar cameras from Sony/Canon] is naive.
No one in their right mind would run & gun with this system, it’s just too big.
I’m blow away with the quality from the XH2/S, especially the ability to have open gate on the S model. It’s small, light & nimble. The 6k > 8K is more than enough, even more so if downsampling. So I can’t even imagine using this system for video unless it was requested by client.
I mean I still watch 99% of videos in 1080P on Youtube….
Fujifilm are supposedly aiming at producing 1500 GF 100II a month, so I think I might be waiting some time for mine to arrive, but I’m looking forward to the upgrade & finally having a native TS lens. I’m sure there will be a follow up post to this about the camera.
